Astronaut Space Food

The same great freeze-dried foods developed by NASA for extended space flights and often enjoyed by American astronauts - They did share them with the Russians. Requires no refrigeration and make great snacks for hiking and canoeing trips. A wonderful novelty that's great fun to share with friends.

Freeze drying removes 98% of the original water content, which gives the ice cream a three-year shelf life. In addition to ice cream, Astronaut foods also feature a line of freeze-dried fruits: strawberries, bananas, peaches, cinnamon apples, and a Fruit & Nut mix that was originally designed for the Apollo Space Missions.

Freeze-dried foods are eaten by astronauts under weightlessness conditions in space. Originally developed for the early Apollo missions, food is frozen to -40 degrees F (-40 degrees C) and then vacuum dried and placed in a special foil pouch. Our products are manufactured by the same company that supplies freeze-dried foods to NASA for Space Shuttle missions. Freeze-dried peaches and freeze dried strawberries...it's a wonderful world. Drop these in cereal, take them on a hike, experiment with them, embrace them and make them a part of your life. Completely all natural and ready to eat.

One of the nations favorite inflight snacks. Delicious tasting freeze-dried premium peaches, cinnamon apple, ice cream sandwich, Astronaut freeze dried bananas, and freeze dried strawberries. Freeze-dried foods have been enjoyed as a healthy snack on space missions by U.S. Astronauts since the earily Apollo Space Missions and are available for Astronauts on Space Shuttle flights today. A great snack on intergalactic missions, earthly travels, scout camps and outdoor adventures. Eat straight from the package. Shelf-life is approximately 2 years. Be sure to checkout our entire line of other freeze-dried and low moisture Space Snacks and camping foods!

You will receive packets of amazing won't-melt, no-refrigeration-necessary freeze-dried chocolate ice cream. Astronaut Space Food. Freeze-dried astronaut ice cream, snacks, meals, & space food sticks. Kids absolutely love these space snacks originally developed for the Apollo Missions. Their made from real ice cream. Give one to every child

Freeze-dried ice cream, "Astronaut Ice Cream," is a type of snack first developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for astronauts to eat in space. Freeze-dried ice cream is completely dehydrated, so it is nearly light as air and dry to the touch, cannot melt, and does not require refrigeration or preparation. It's easy to eat by hand and won't make a mess. Freeze-dried ice cream was first used by astronauts on the Apollo missions of the 1960s and 70s, and it is still used on space flights today. Freeze dried space snacks are available at Preparedness.com Freeze-dried ice cream is usually Neapolitan, with a stripe each of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry flavors. It is made out of real ice cream, so it tastes like ice cream and contains all the original nutrients, but has a dry, crunchy texture. Freeze-dried ice cream sandwiches can also be found, along with other snacks like pizza and peaches. Freeze-dried ice cream and other "Astronaut" food is ideal for hiking trips or other occasions in which one wants to bring food but travel light.

Freeze-dried ice cream is made through a process called lyophilization. The ice cream is frozen to -40° Fahrenheit (-40° Celsius) and placed in a vacuum chamber. Air is removed from the vacuum chamber, and then the chamber is heated, allowing the ice to vaporize, dehydrating the freeze dried ice cream. Through this process, the intermediary liquid state (water) between solid (ice) and gas (vapor) that would exist in natural conditions is bypassed. This change of state from a solid directly to a gas is known as sublimation in physics.

Freeze-dried ice cream is both a practical snack for outdoor trips and a fun treat for children or anyone interested in science. Preparedness.com carries many freeze-dried treats available through our online store.

But now you can take your taste buds on a space odyssey with Astronaut Ice Cream the first space snack – which comes minus the ice but with the approval of the world’s leading authority on space exploration, NASA.

In fact, ever since the Apollo missions through to the more recent development of the international space station, NASA’s astronauts have snacked on this delicious freeze-dried ice cream that'll even make Mr.Whippy wanna grab a slice.

That's right - this official NASA ice cream is light enough to throw into your backpack (or a pocket in your space suit) and only contains a mere 8g of fat per serve!

Need we say more than to simply take a bite and marvel as the dry and crunchy slice melts in your mouth, taking on the creamy texture and rich flavour of either Neopolitan ice cream (chocolate, strawberry and vanilla) or an Ice Cream Sandwich (vanilla ice cream within two chocolate wafers).

And there's a reason this astronaut space ice-cream is so popular with NASA’s astronauts – it tastes delicious, it’s mess-free, long-lasting, won’t hurt sensitive teeth and it won’t drip all over the place!

Better still, it's great for camping, hiking or picnics at the park so even if you can’t hitch a ride on a space shuttle or plant a flag on the moon, you'll still be able to send your sweet tooth into orbit.

Some frequently asked questions:

Is it real ice cream?
Yes and each official Astronaut Ice Cream pack can be stored for many years without refrigeration as long as you keep them in an airtight, sealed container.

How much comes in a package?
Each pack contains a standard serving size of ice cream measuring approximately 6.5 x 8 x 2cm (Neopolitan) and 11 x 4 x 2cm (sandwich).

What does it taste like?
Because it's been freeze-dried (most all the moisture has been removed out of it), it is dry, crunchy and almost has the same texture as the inside of a Malteser. However, once you place it in your mouth and it starts to dissolve, the ice cream flavour really comes out.

Is it the realthing?

Yes, Astronaut Ice Cream is kosher and the package bears the official Astronaut Foods symbol.

Astronaut Ice Cream has Certified Space Technology approval and is officially used by NASA Astronauts.
