Cyalume light sticks or glow sticks are used for emergency preparedness, industrial safety, trick-or-treaters, divers, campers, and for decoration and fun! A lightstick is a plastic tube with a glass vial inside of it. In order to activate a lightstick, you bend the plastic stick, which breaks the glass vial. This allows the chemicals that were inside the glass to mix with the chemicals in the plastic tube. Once these substances contact each other, a reaction starts taking place. The reaction releases light, causing the stick to glow!

Glow sticks (also called light sticks) are lots of fun and for safety applications. You can get glow sticks in many different colors (red, yellow, green and white. they come individually wrapped.
Our light sticks can either glow for a long time or brightly for a short time. The "burn time" depends on the formula that is used, on the length, on the fill level, on the color, and on the chemicals used. The glow times for each glow stick are listed at the top of each category or on the stick.
To activate your light stick, just bend the stick until you hear the stick make a popping sound. There are 2 liquids inside the stick. One liquid is inside of a glass ampule and that is what you hear "popping" when you bend the stick to activate it. The glow stick will start glowing when the two liquids mix together.
Glow sticks do not have an on/off switch. Once activated, the stick will glow until it's power is out. It is possible to temporarily stop the glow by freezing the stick, but freezing will not rejuvenate the stick. When the stick thaws out, it will start back up where it left off. If there is any glow left when the stick is frozen, it will glow at the same level when it thaws out.

Chemistry
Incandescence, as in a candle, involves the conversion of chemical energy to heat, followed by conversion of some of the heat energy to light. Chemical light or chemiluminescence differs in that chemical energy is converted directly to light without the involvement of heat. While the chemical reaction is highly sophisticated, the chemical lighting device is essentially a simple container designed to hold two separate solutions which when allowed to mix will emit light. The two solutions are separated by placing one in a very thin walled ampule. The second solution along with the ampule are then placed in a plastic tube and sealed. The lightstick is then activated by bending the plastic tube until the inner ampule breaks allowing the two solutions to mix. A typical light reaction can last 6 to 8 hours or more depending upon the formulation used.
Toxicity
The components used are non toxic, non corrosive and non irritating in nature. Neither component is caustic nor acidic. In case of accidental contact with skin or eyes, it may be removed by flushing the areas well with water.

Glowstick or lightstick, is a transparent plastic tube which contains a chemical reaction designed to produce light of various colours, depending on the chemicals used.
Glowsticks are waterproof, do not use batteries, and are inexpensive and disposable. They can tolerate high pressures, such as that found underwater. They are used as light sources and light markers in various settings such as in the military, by campers, and by recreational divers doing night diving. They may also be used by marching band conductors for night time performances, and also used for entertainment at parties (especially raves), concerts, and dance clubs. Glowsticking refers to the use of glowsticks in dancing. A further application are light effects, especially balloon-carried light effects.
Glowsticks are considered the only safe light source, directly after earthquakes, due to the fact that they do not use any kind of electricity to work, and there is no danger of sparking. However, many glowsticks use a chemical reaction which entails the use of toxic Hydrogen Peroxide. Also, poisonous phenol is produced as a by-product. Therefore, it is advisable to keep the chemicals away from skin, and food if the glowstick case splits, or breaks. The dyes used in glowsticks usually exhibit fluorescence when exposed to ultraviolet radiation. Therefore even a spent glowstick will shine under a black light.
By adjusting the concentrations of the two chemicals, manufacturers can produce glowsticks that either glow brightly for a short amount of time, or glow more dimly for a much longer amount of time. At maximum concentration (typically only found in laboratory settings), mixing the chemicals results in a furious reaction, producing large amounts of light for only a few seconds.
Heating a glowstick causes the reaction to proceed faster and the glowstick to glow brighter, but for a shorter period of time. Cooling a glowstick slows the reaction and causes it to last longer, but the light is dimmer. This can be demonstrated by refrigerating or freezing an active glowstick; when it warms up again, it will resume glowing.
